I'm a huge fan of anime that creates incredibly detailed and immersive worlds. While fantasy is great, I'm looking for something outside of the typical magic/swords setting. What anime has truly impressive world-building, perhaps sci-fi, cyberpunk, or historical?
Ghost in the Shell (especially the movies and Stand Alone Complex) is iconic for its cyberpunk world-building. Deep philosophical themes too. 🤖
Psycho-Pass does an excellent job building a dystopian future society controlled by the Sibyl System. Very thought-provoking! 🤔
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (the original OVA) has unparalleled political and military world-building in space. It's a masterpiece!
For a historical setting, Golden Kamuy is fantastic! The Ainu culture and Hokkaido wilderness are incredibly well-researched and depicted.
Serial Experiments Lain is a classic for its depiction of a surreal, interconnected digital world. Very abstract and deep.
