I'm looking for some good sci-fi mecha anime! I've seen the big Gundam series, but I'm interested in recommendations that might be a bit more mature, thought-provoking, or just have a unique take on the genre. Anything with cool mecha designs and a compelling story would be great!

"86 EIGHTY-SIX" is a recent gem with fantastic mecha action, a compelling story about war and prejudice, and great character development.
"Macross Frontier" if you want something with awesome transforming mecha, space battles, and a great soundtrack with idol elements. Fun stuff!
